In 2021, Lakeside’s first report on workplace technology — The Future of Digital Workplaces — was carried out during the Covid-19 outbreak. As such, it recorded how IT and business leaders were responding to a seismic change in work life.
This year, Lakeside is going deeper on the major issue facing distributed organizations in 2022: workforce productivity. While workers have been increasingly bullish on the future of remote and hybrid work, some business leaders have sought a return to a more traditional in-office dynamic. Executives from prominent organizations such as Tesla, Microsoft, and Google have admitted to unease about how teams can be collaborative, communicative, and productive when they don’t share a physical space.
The Digital Workplace Productivity Report 2022 is one of the most comprehensive reports of its kind, as it specifically focuses on the challenge of creating productive digital workplaces that meet the needs of employers and employees. It draws from a global survey of 600 total respondents, including executives, IT leaders, and employees, giving a 360-degree view on how organizations are supporting — or failing to support — digital workers.

Key findings in the report establish the vital role DEX plays in supporting high-performing, productive teams. Workers admit to being frustrated by both the technology they interact with every day and the overall IT infrastructure that supports their workplace:
- On average, employees claim they are achieving only 60% of their potential work output because of the suboptimal quality of their overall digital experience.
- Productivity is also hindered by regular IT disruption, with employees losing 54 minutes of work time every week because of technical issues.
- IT departments face a huge challenge in addressing this productivity gap, as Lakeside’s research shows 40% of workplace technology issues go unreported to IT teams.

Businesses that are not prioritizing the digital experience of employees are at a strategic disadvantage.
